I want to write about what is on my mind – and today that is Instagram’s new app Threads.
I am an early adopter of technology.
- New gadget – yes please.
- New productivity software – absolutely, what can it do.
- New app – lets try it.
- New social media – YES.
Last night Instagram (well Meta) released Threads, a social media app to fill the void that Twitter’s awful new policies are creating. Basically it takes your Instagram, you import over all of the stuff, and have the ability to have a more text based social media experience.
I tried it last night with millions of other people… and it brought me so much joy.
Community in action
In the grand scheme of things, Threads isn’t anything revolutionary. The big thing about threads that has me, and many others excited, is the idea of how it is all of us experiencing this moment together. Access wasn’t granted over weeks, it was granted over minutes or hours. Everyone was jumping in simultaneously! There was no waiting for an invite or trying to get in, it just happened.
The interface feels comfy enough to settle right into without having to figure out too much. This means that everyone was able to jump right in and experience it at the time… and out loud.
We are all self-aware or media savvy enough to know that something like this is rare and exciting. And that was the vibe.
Possibilities
This awareness made it easier to poke fun at ourselves and others. The algorithm also seemed to make no sense even though we had some of the same connections as Instagram. I was excited to see names I didn’t know (and joyfully mute those that I have zero interest in seeing more form).
It was silly, it was chaotic, it was a moment.
Here’s the thing – its not over! Thats the beauty is that it is still in its infancy and seeing people experience it in real time is part of the fun.
It was something I need, and am glad to be a part of.
Will I continue to thread, or create threads, or whatever. Probably! But if it fizzles out that is just fine with me because for right now, its fun.
It truly is rare to feel like you’re having fun with millions of other people.
