I hate laundry.

I know this isn’t a revolutionary or unpopular opinion, but I hate it.

Let’s be honest I hate all housework. I have always envied the people who seem to get joy or relaxation from housework. I remember growing up my one of my friends said she loved cleaning, I remember thinking she was a psychopath. For a kindergartner, I feel like this is pretty intense of a response.

I hate laundry in particular because the act of doing laundry, still can create more laundry (unless you do your laundry naked, which I don’t need to know about but appreciate your willingness to be free). Don’t get me started on putting the laundry away. Do I have too many clothes? Yes. Do I need your or my husband’s commentary on this? No.

Laundry is never truly done. Add in two children and laundry isn’t just not done, but always a problem, even when you think it is done.

I was going off about this to my husband, basically trying to see if I can make a tight 5 minute standup set about it, and realized, damn it, I hate laundry because it is always the middle.

As an ongoing process, there is no true finish line. Yes you can finish a load, you can put things away, but you’re never done, there is always more. I started to think about other things that are never truly done that we wish would be – things like grief (spoiler alert, a grief essay is coming your way thanks to laundry). We are always in the middle, we cannot truly escape it fully.

I am going to work on reframing how I see Laundry. Maybe it isn’t a chore but a rhythm or flow. Maybe I can look at it more like I look at learning and evolving, something that is never done but I love the act of it anyway.

Even typing that I don’t believe myself.
